Friday Fiction: Buses, Bruises, and Waves

Ali let her forehead touch the window of the bus as she watched the Metro Manila cityscape scroll by. The sky was still dark and the cars on the road were few and far between. It won't be another hour until the traffic congestion starts. With a five-hour trip ahead of her, Ali tried to get some sleep.

It didn't work of course. The minute she closed her eyes it all came back to her: the screaming, the tears, the feeling of her heart wanting to jump out of her chest. Her left hand immediately went to her right arm, and she squirmed as she imagined how it looked underneath her green long-sleeved shirt. The apple-sized bruise is only starting to show, in a couple of days it will turn purple, and she'd have to make sure she keeps it hidden from everyone.

She'd have to wear a sleeved rash guard when she goes out to catch the waves. She didn't want anyone asking about anything, she just wanted to surf. She just wanted the sea to swallow everything up, like it's always done. The ocean has always been her dumping site for every emotional garbage life throws at her. This was just another thing she has to unload.

The bus was moving fast but Ali still caught sight of the building where it all began. Where she met him. She wondered what her life would have been like had she not gone there that day to visit her friend. For the hundredth time, she wondered how different things would have been had their paths never crossed two years ago.

It had been a hot and humid Wednesday afternoon, and Ali shielded her eyes from the 2pm sun, her top clinging to her back. She had taken the train because her car was stuck in their garage, the MMDA's number-coding scheme banning it on the roads that day. Matt had invited her to a late lunch/early dinner because he needed to vent out to someone regarding the bad day he was having. Ali was then in between jobs and dying of boredom at home, so she happily agreed.

She heaved a sigh of relief when she saw the big glass doors of Matt's office, and welcomed the blast of airconditioning once she stepped inside the lobby. She registered her name, got her visitor's pass, and sat on one of the couches to compose herself. She took out her cellphone and texted Matt that she was already there.

Ten minutes. I'll ring you when you can go up. I'm on the third floor.

When she heard her phone ring, Ali stood up and headed for the elevator. As the doors closed, she checked her reflection on the mirror to her right. That's when she saw the navy bowtie attached to a suit of a smiling guy behind her.

"Are you here about your complaint?"

What is he talking about?

"You're going to the complaints department," said David Blaine-wannabe. Then he pointed at her chest.

Ali looked at her visitor's pass and sure enough, it betrayed her destination.

"Oh no, I'm just here to visit Matt Perez."

Ali broke eye contact first and looked at his shoes instead. Dark brown wingtips. Dapper.

"I didn't know Matt had a girlfriend."

"What makes you think I'm his girlfriend?"

"You're not?"

"Why do you want to know?"

He smiled. He touched his right earlobe and shook his head.

"It doesn't matter. Can we start again? I'm Ralph." He reached out his hand.

Ali was about to extend hers when the elevator doors opened. She turned her head as she stepped out and said, "See you around Ralph."

The bus's loud horn brought her back to the present. They're just about to enter the expressway, and her seatmate was deep in sleep. Ali's stomach grumbled, and she took out a pack of cheese crackers from her backpack. She'll have a hearty breakfast later at the resort, her usual plate of tapsilog. She'll rest for an hour, catch a nap if her mind will let her, and then go surf. She wasn't an expert, far from it, even after several trips to the beach. She spent more time sitting on her board staring out to sea, waiting for a good wave, then chickening out the last minute. She's wiped out more times than she can count. But when she does catch one, when she's able to stand up and ride, she remembers why she keeps doing it.

She thought back to her past trips to the resort, her many sunset surfing sessions. She recalled how she thought she would rather wipe out a thousand times, how she'd rather drown than go back to her life with him. But now she doesn't have  to, because he's no longer in her life. She actually managed to walk away. Scathed, yes, but she can heal. She will heal. That's what the ocean is for.

Get Blisstified: An Afternoon of Passion and Positivity

Friday, September 23, 2016

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines passion as "a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept."

When I was asked in a job interview what passion means to me, I said it's something that seeps inside you, like blood. It's something you can't turn away from, no matter how hard you try, it will always manifest itself. And for me, that passion is writing.

There was a time in my life when I thought of changing careers. I thought there must be something else out there for me. But writing has always sustained me, it did not only make me earn, but it also enabled me to best express myself. So after trying to walk away from it several times, this time I decided to embrace it.

Enter Get Blisstified. Ever since I met Martine De Luna at the Topaz Horizon x Bobbi Brown Workshop, I've wanted to attend her own series of workshops, specifically the Blissmakerie. But it always gets sold out so fast!

Martine is the editor-in-chief of Make it Blissful, and she used to offer blog coaching services to her clients.

With Get Blisstified, Martine collaborated with life coach Kimi Lu. There's a fancy, scientific term for what Kimi does, but using my own words, Kimi helps you get into the right mindset to achieve your goals.

Kimi Lu and Martine De Luna

When the workshop was announced, I was immediately interested because it promised to help people with their passion projects, with actionable steps and guidance from both Martine and Kimi. And they weren't just doing it for one day, but for one whole year!

The first #GetBlisstified workshop was held on September 3, Saturday, at the lovely La Creperie in Burgos Circle, BGC. The second floor was reserved for us, 22 individuals each with a passion project we decided to finally pursue. I was very excited to be in the company of women who had the same intentions and maybe hesitations as well. But we were there to learn and take the first step together. It was a huge relief to know that I wasn't alone in this.

The afternoon started with a little energizer and introductions of attendees. It was like the first day of school, but each of us ended our introductions with three things we were grateful for on that day. It was a great way to start on such a positive note.

I initially thought Martine and Kimi would huddle with each of us to discuss our passion projects, kind of like consultants. What happened was we were divided up in pairs, and we got to work on our projects with our partners, with Kimi and Martine as our guides. We laid them all out, discussed our action plans, and even envisioned the results a year from now (an effective exercise as I and my partner Kat could attest).

What I discovered that afternoon was that each of us has a different passion project in mind. Yes, there are those launching their businesses, those who want to develop their blogs (like me), but there are also those whose passion projects include building a family, studying again, and creating an art camp for kids.

But even if we have different journeys ahead of us, we all have one destination: the realization of our passion projects.

The best thing about the Get Blisstified experience is having a support group and mentors to help you out. I love how you have a personal cheering squad to help you stay motivated, even when the everyday responsibilities and stress get in the way. They also help you to keep your eyes on the prize with monthly and weekly activities. I can't wait for September next year, when we meet again, a graduation of sorts.

Maybe it was just a coincidence that we were all women who attended, but Get Blisstified is open to everyone!

With my seatmates DJ, Kat, and Juno.

That afternoon, we didn't just leave with a renewed mindset, we also went home with a lot of goodies! Each participant received a personalized journal from Wishlist Studio, which we will use during our year-long journey. We also got a lovely-smelling candle from Balay Kandila (I got a big one because I paid early), a travel size beauty kit from Pure Beauté (shampoo, conditioner, facial wash, and moisturizer made from virgin coconut oil), plus a sample tube of Make A Difference moisturizer and a free facial certificate from Origins. Several Grateful Jars were also raffled off. I must mention that we enjoyed a wonderful meal of eggplant moussaka and chocolate crepe from La Creperie. I will definitely go back to try their bestselling Angelina hot chocolate.

The good news is Martine and Kimi are having a new #GetBlisstified workshop on September 28! It'll be held at Earth Kitchen, BGC from 10am-1pm. The fee is Php2,500/pax. You may contact 0917-493-0722 for further inquiries and registration. If you've been pushing that passion project on the back burner for a while, then it's time to face it head on!

Romy Roams Ilocos Day 3

We started our last day in Ilocos with a trip to the Juan and Antonio Luna Museum. This stop is highly-recommended. They show a short clip about the Luna brothers, and that's how I learned that the award-winning Juan Luna killed his wife and mother-in-law in a fit of raging jealousy. However, he was acquitted of the murder charges on grounds of temporary insanity.

The museum used to be the Luna's house in Ilocos Sur, before the family moved to Manila. Most of the house's foundation still exists, but some renovations were done throughout the years.

After the museum we had lunch at Cafe Leona on Calle Crisologo. We rode the Kalesa which included a tour to the Bantay Bell Tower and the Quirino Museum.

An intricate wooden chest given to President Quirino from Chiang Kai Shek.

A quick stroll along Calle Crisologo, where we saw Lovi Poe and Tom Rodriguez taping for Someone To Watch Over Me hehe, and we went on our way.

We also stopped at the Lihim na Hardin, but then it rained so we left immediately. Our itinerary also included visiting Baluarte, owned by former Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson. Only J, Y, and I went because of the rain, and honestly, I wish we didn't. Even if some of the animals were freely roaming around, they still looked sad and out of place.

I was also dismayed at the Safari Museum, which displayed Singson's kills. Taxidermied heads of various deers, bears (there was a polar bear!), and even an elephant were proudly displayed, along with photos of when Chavit shot them to death. I know hunting is legal in the places where he does it, I just can't imagine how people do this and be happy about it.

After Baluarte, our driver brought us to the places where we bought souvenirs and pasalubong (different stops for T-shirts and trinkets, Bagnet, and bibingka).

We left for Manila around 6pm and arrived at 1am. All in all a tiring but fun trip!

Our tour package was priced at 3,699 per person for a 3-day, 2-night stay including transportation, accommodations, breakfasts, day tours, and entrance fees (except the sand dunes adventure). You may contact Luiza Casimiro of NorthBound Gems Travel & Events at 0917-591-65-00.

And that's it for my first edition of #RomyRoams. Thanks for reading!

Romy Roams Ilocos Day 2: Laoag Sand Dunes, Cape Bojeador, and Bangui Windmills

The highlight of our trip would have to be the 4x4 ride in the Laoag Sand Dunes. We had to be ready by 6am and take a short ride to the sand dunes.

Before we began, we were given a few reminders. J, Y, and I were standing at the back of the 4x4, and we were told to bend our knees and hold tight.

It was a blast!!! We were screaming and laughing throughout the ride. It was like being on a roller coaster, but the feeling was more intense, and there were bumps along with the rise and dips. We stopped at certain places to take photos. It felt like we were out of the country. Toto, we're not in Pinas anymore!

The Laoag Sand Dunes adventure also came with unlimited sand boarding. You either sit or stand on the board and slide down the sands. I had sand all over me on my first try. Inside my t-shirt, on my face, at the back of my neck, everywhere. But I still gave it a second try. Fun!

One 4x4 ride costs Php2,500 and it can accommodate up to 5 passengers. But even if there are only two passengers, the price is still the same. So better to avail of this in groups.

For your own sand dunes adventure, contact Marlon Castro at 09758885687/09465859455. You may contact them thru their Facebook page, Laoag Sand Dunes Ilocos Escapade.

We returned to the hotel to have breakfast, then proceeded with the tour. We visited the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse.

We tried authentic Ilocos Empanada after a tiring climb to the lighthouse.

We visited the Bangui Windmills next. This was a special place for me because when I visited in 2009, I wished that J was with me (hence my sign). Fast forward to 2016, and there we were!

We proceeded to Pagudpud Beach. It was too hot to swim, and we didn't have enough time anyway so we only ate a very mediocre lunch at Hannah's Resort and some of us (not including me) tried the zip line over the ocean.

The Blue Lagoon in Pagudpud Beach.

Then we stopped to take photos at the Patapat Viaduct and the Bantay Abot Cave.

A literal long and winding road, the Patapat Viaduct is the fourth longest bridge in the country.

The Bantay Abot Cave is not really a cave, but a hill with a hole in it because it got destroyed by an earthquake.

Our last stop for the day was the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. We could only take photos and admire it from afar, because it's now forbidden to go to the exact rock formation. I wonder when this started, because I saw many tourists and even prenup photos shot there.

Because we were going home the next day (Saturday), we didn't have a chance to attend worship service at any locale in Ilocos. I did see a lot of chapels big and small scattered throughout the province. I snapped one on our way back from Kapurpurawan and back to the hotel after our day's tour.

Romy Roams Ilocos!

I was still working for an entertainment magazine when I first went to Ilocos in 2009. Our staff had our team planning at Sitio Remedios, a beautiful heritage resort owned by St. Luke's cardiologist Dr. Cuanang, located in Sitio Kurrimao, Ilocos Norte.

Last month, I went back to Ilocos with J and his family, but this time, we also spent a day touring Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

If on my first trip we took a plane that landed in Laoag International Airport, this time we rented a van and traveled for roughly nine hours.

While Vigan was in our itinerary for the last day, it was actually our first stop as we had our breakfast there. We chose Kusina Felicitas, and we had their silog meals. I chose Tapa Ilokano, the restaurant specialty that leans toward the sour-salty side. My kind of flavor profile!

A few more hours of driving and we reached Paoay Church. By then it was noon, too hot to take photos, and time for lunch.

We ate at Herencia Restaurant, which claims to be the birthplace of Pinakbet Pizza. We didn't order that though. We had Bagnet and the classic Pinakbet. We brought our dog Chowie along for this trip, and because there was no pets allowed in the resto, J and I waited outside for a bit until someone else finished eating. While waiting, I bought a cone of dirty ice cream with 2 flavors: avocado and dragon fruit, which is grown in the area. Perfect for the heat!

After lunch, we had our photos taken, and also bought some pasalubong: the requisite chichacorn, some T-shirts, and fans. I also bought a small pack of rice coffee for Tita L who loves drinking strong coffee (it wasn't until I gave it to her that I found out it was decaf! Haha).

We then visited former Pres. Marcos's remains in the Marcos Mausoleum (No photos allowed. Incidentally, a couple of days after our trip, the debate on his burial at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani ensued). After that, we went to Malacañang of the North, where former President Marcos and his family resided when he was in Ilocos Norte. The mansion, which has a view of the Paoay Lake, is now a museum. They charge a Php50 entrance fee, but we didn't have to pay since it was already included in our tour package.

After a long day, we arrived at our hotel in Laoag and turned in for the night. We had an early start the next morning for our tour. Click here to read about Romy Roams Ilocos Day 2!

Road-tested: Happy Skin Glam Squad Liquid Matte Lipstick

Homegrown makeup brand Happy Skin recently launched their latest collaboration, the Happy Skin Glam Squad. Known for their collaborations with celebrities, Happy Skin has now teamed up with four of the country's top makeup artists: Juan Sarte, Mickey See, Jigs Mayuga, and Denise Go-Ochoa.

Makeup artists Juan Sarte, Mickey See, Denise Go-Ochoa, and Jigs Mayuga.

"By collaborating with the country's star-makers and most celebrated makeup artists, Happy Skin Glam Squad gives women the celebrity experience while keeping the brand's well-loved promise of makeup that cares for your skin," says Rissa Mananquil-Trillo, who co-founded Happy Skin with Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez in 2013.

Rissa and Jacqe have long been a part of the fashion and beauty circles, with Rissa being one of the country's top models and Jaque previously working for an international skincare brand.

Rissa shared with us why Happy Skin chose the four Filipino makeup masters. "In my fifteen years in the fashion and beauty industry, I have not seen anyone as enduring as these four," she says in an email interview. "They are the people responsible for elevating the visual language of beauty in our industry. The standards they've set have become aspirational to their peers and to many women. It's no wonder they have become the most sought-after makeup artists of celebrities."

The collection includes liquid matte lipsticks (Php699), eyeshadow duos (Php899), a color and contour palette (Php1,399), an arch definer & brow mascara (Php949), and a special brush set with case (Php2,999). The main Happy Skin line is known for its eye-catching pastel packaging, but the Happy Skin Glam Squad collection comes in an elegant rose gold packaging.

Juan Sarte's makeup chair has been graced by the likes of Judy Ann Santos and Maine Mendoza. To achieve a modern look, he chose a universal mauve liquid matte lipstick and eyeshadows in bronze and champagne.

Mickey See is sought after by brides and has painted on the faces of Kristine Hermosa-Sotto and Liza Soberano. You can create a blushing look with his deep blush liquid lippie and eyeshadows in shimmery peach and light brown.

Jigs Mayuga is the go-to makeup artist for Cheska Kramer and Shaina Magdayao. He chose a rose-brown liquid lipstick and matte eyeshadows in black and brown to help you create a bold look.

Denise Go-Ochoa's celebrity clientele includes teen queen Kathryn Bernardo and Bea Alonzo. She came up with a peach liquid lippie shade, and eyeshadows in caramel and medium brown shades to give you a fresh look.

Days before the launch, I chanced upon the collection at their Trinoma stall. Being a makeup newbie, I was drawn to the liquid matte lipsticks. For me, when my eyebrows are groomed and I have lipstick on, then I'm good to go. I swatched the four shades, and found the one by Mickey See suited me the most.

From top: Denise Go-Ochoa, Jigs Mayuga, Juan Sarte, and Mickey See.

For the roadtest:

When J's sister let me try her Colour Pop liquid matte lippie, she also had the lip primer. Now as I said, I'm a total beginner, so I only have Chapstick in my arsenal. I used that to prime my lip, then I applied a single coat of Happy Skin's Mickey See shade.

Look at that rich formula. One swipe at the bottom and one at the top.

The lipstick glides easily and the formula is long-wearing. Simply using tissue paper won't remove it. You only need a few seconds to let it dry, and it's not sticky. Pretty soon you forget that you're wearing it at all.

When I say it's long-wearing, I mean it. After drinking water, eating lunch, and grabbing a sandwich, this lippie passes the test. Yes, the lipstick leaves a trace on your water bottle or the spoon, but not enough for you to need a major touch-up. The only time I did was after eating a bowl of ramen. Just a little note: when worn, the shade leans towards the color purple more than blush. I don't know why it doesn't translate into my photos. A photo here shows a closer resemblance when worn.

Left: Freshly-applied. Right: After eating dinner.

My favorite thing about the Happy Skin Glam Squad liquid matte lipstick is it's not drying at all! Lipsticks tend to make my lips dry, and matte lipsticks are more notorious for that. Maybe the Chapstick helped too, but I've been using my Mickey See as an everyday lipstick and my lips remain moisturized and chap-free! The lipstick contains Cupuaçu Butter, which hydrates and heals your lips.

I highly recommend you pick your own Happy Skin Glam Squad liquid matte lipstick (and a few other items from the collection too if you're a makeup junkie). With four shades to choose from, you'll definitely find the one for you. A portion of the collection's sales will also be given to the four makeup artists' choice of charities. So you'd be helping others too with your purchase! Now that's beauty with a purpose, ain't it? :)

Happy Skin is available in major malls, Plains & Prints and Beauty Bar branches, and online.
